Volunteers across the nation are stepping up to show that the fallen men and women who once served in the armed forces are not forgotten.

Organizers with Wreaths Across America placed more than 4,400 wreaths on gravestones at Knoxville National Cemetery Saturday, as well as in two other veterans cemeteries in the area.

Each wreath is sponsored by individual donations. Chad Rogers, the organization's coordinator in Knoxville, said the wreaths are just one way to make sure the legacies of fallen veterans will live on.

"They may have been young when they were killed in action or passed away, or they may have been career soldiers that never married or their family passed away. They may not have anybody, so this is a way to keep them alive."

Wreaths Across America asked volunteers to take a moment when placing wreaths to reflect on the person who sacrificed so much for the country.
