Two other people were killed in the crash. Rebecca Kirkland, the passenger in Kirkland's vehicle, and Matthew Sherwood, who was a passenger in Allard's car.

UPDATE (1/29 2 p.m.) -- Contrary to overnight reports, two people are dead following a multi-car crash on U.S. Route 411 in Blount County.

According to the accident report, Driver David Kirkland, 54, of Vonore, was traveling north on U.S. Highway 411 when his car crossed the yellow line dividing the road. The car continued through the turn lane and into the southbound lane, where it collided with a car traveling south with four people inside.

The crash killed Rebecca Kirkland, 49, who was in the car that left its lane, and Matthew Sherwood, 28, who was a passenger in the car that was hit. The other four passengers were all injured in the crash.

Rebecca and David Kirkland were wearing a seatbelt, as was the other driver. None of the other passengers were, though the report suggests that seatbelts would not have made a difference in the opinion of the officer.
