ACSD arrests, charges 2 people in connection to shooting near Claxton

Anderson County Sheriff's Department has arrested and charged two people in connection to a shooting off of Clinton Highway Saturday.

UPDATE Jan. 14, 4:06 p.m.: Two people have been arrested and charged in connection to a shooting that happened south of Claxton on Saturday, according to Chief Deputy Mark Lucas at Anderson County Sheriff's Department.

Jacob Lynn Rutherford, 23, has been charged with three counts of attempted murder, according to ACSD. He is at the Anderson County Detention Facility pending bond being set at arraignment, Lucas said in a release.

Maggie Taylor Atteberry, 24, is Rutherford's girlfriend and was charged with accessory after the fact and has been since released on bond.

Lucas said Anderson County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a person shot at a Bread Box on Edgemoor Road south of Claxton Saturday evening.

They found Nathan Lynn Phillips, 36, with gunshot wounds at the store. Another person had been driving Phillips to the hospital but had to stop at the Bread Box to call for an ambulance.

Phillips was taken to UT Medical by EMS where he is being treated for his injuries, Lucas said in a statement. Phillips still remains at the hospital.

Deputies were also called to a home off of Clinton Highway shortly after going to the Bread Box, where they found William Ernest Foster, 34, also shot in his home, Lucas said in a release. Foster was taken to UT Medical and has since been released.

The shooting suspect, Rutherford, also attempted to shoot a third person but missed, Lucas said in the release. Additional charges for Rutherford are pending.

Anderson County Sheriff's Department is still investigating the situation.

PREVIOUS Jan. 13, 11:21 p.m.: Two people have been taken into custody after a shooting south of Claxton on Saturday, according to Anderson County Sheriff's Department.

A person was shot at the Bread Box Market on Edgemoor Road in Claxton Saturday, ACSD confirmed.

Once deputies arrived at the scene, they found the shooting had taken place at a home off of Clinton Highway. Deputies arrived at the home to find a second person who had been shot.

Both shooting victims were taken to UT Medical Center by Anderson County EMS with non-life threatening injuries.

No names will be released until investigators determine the role the two played in the shooting.

Sheriff's detectives are investigating what happened.
