Tennessee finishes last in naturalization test scores according to study

Tennessee ranks last among states in average scores on the naturalization test according to a study by Joe Foss Institute.

A study by the Joe Foss Institute tested 25,000 Unites States citizens across the country with a shortened version of the naturalization test.

Tennessee ranked last in the country and was the only state where average scores were lower then the minimum percent to pass.

In order for immigrants to pass the test, they need to answer 60 percent of the questions correctly. Tennesseans averaged 5.7 out of 10.

The state receiving the highest average score is South Dakota with 8.67 out of 10.

The study also found that the average scores increase with the test taker's age. The youngest group, 18 to 24-year olds scored an average of 6.66. The oldest age group scored an average of 7.38.

The Joe Foss Institute is a nonprofit focused on American civics education for young people.
