Young Williams Animal Center has seen a rise in population of puppies and kittens during spring months

The shelter is partnering with Bissell to lower adoption fees on May 1.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Spring season is puppy and kitten season, and Young Williams Animal Center is seeing more young animals with more needs in their shelters.

Currently, Young Williams has hundreds of dogs in their care and hundreds more in foster care.

"Our intake numbers haven't changed that drastically, we are seeing a big change in our shelter population," Volunteer Coordinator Carmen Shepherd said. "So lots of puppies coming in. It kind of shifts what we need to do. Because you know, puppies are a little bit different than adult dogs, we have to be a bit more careful about exposing them to disease."

To help, BISSELL Pet Foundation is pairing with several shelters across Tennessee, including Young Williams, to lower adoption fees.

"Adoption fees are sometimes a barrier for some adopters," Shepherd said. "So it's really heartwarming to see when that obstacle is removed."

The event runs May 1-15, and fees for adult dogs, adult cats, and puppies are $20, in honor of Young William's 20th birthday.

Other animal shelters are also partnering with the company to reduce adoption fees, including:

Blount County Animal Center

Roane County Animal Shelter

Claiborne Animal Shelter

Monroe County Friends of Animals

CARE Jefferson County
