KPD: Man arrested in Kentucky for second-degree murder after woman found dead in Knoxville apartment

The shooting is believed to be domestic in nature, the Knoxville Police Department said.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Update (4/26 1:45 p.m.): The Knoxville Police Department's Homicide Unit said it obtained a warrant charging Michael Merrick, a 49-year-old, with second-degree murder after a woman was fatally shot in an apartment complex. 

Nicole Fanney, a 49-year-old, was found dead inside her apartment at 3210 Atchley Ridge Way, KPD said. 

The shooting is believed to be domestic, according to KPD. 

Merrick left the apartment before officers arrived but was taken into custody in Whitley County, Kentucky for DUI. He's currently being held at the Whitley County Detention Center and will be extradited back to Knoxville, KPD said.

The Knoxville Police Department said its detectives are pursuing strong leads after a deadly shooting at an apartment complex. 

Officers were dispatched to an apartment at 3210 Atchley Ridge Way around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to KPD.

When officials arrived on the scene, they found a woman inside the apartment who was shot multiple times. She was pronounced dead at the scene, KPD said.

A suspect has not been arrested or charged and the investigation remains ongoing, according to KPD.
