Hamilton Co. Commissioner Tim Boyd indicted for extortion

Boyd is accused of extorting an opponent in an upcoming election.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has obtained an indictment against Hamilton County Commissioner Tim Boyd, who is accused of attempting to extort an opponent in an upcoming election.

According to the TBI, agents developed information that Boyd was attempting to force an opponent to withdraw from the commissioner's race by threatening to release information perceived to be damaging by Boyd.

Boyd was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday and booked today after appearing at the Commission meeting. His bond was set for $2,500.

Boyd is facing one extortion charge, which is a Class D Felony.

According to Tennessee law, the sentence could range from 2 to 12 years, depending on the number of prior felony convictions. Boyd does not have a criminal past.
