KPD: Woman shot while trying to steal motorcycle

The woman was taken to the hospital in "extremely critical condition," according to the Knoxville Police Department.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Police Department said a woman is in "extremely critical condition" after a shooting early Monday morning in North Knoxville.

KPD officers responded to shooting reports at the Red Roof Inn on Central Avenue Pike around 4:15 a.m. While responding, officers discovered a female gunshot victim in the parking lot of the Hooters on Central Avenue Pike, according to KPD.

When officers arrived at Hooters, they saw a man providing aid to the victim. The man then got on a motorcycle and sped away from the scene. The motorcyclist crashed on Cedar Lane near Haynes Sterchi Road and was detained by officers, who learned the motorcycle was stolen out from Chattanooga, KPD said.

Based on the investigation, it's believed the man and woman had gone to the Red Roof Inn and were trying to steal another motorcycle. At some point, a man fired multiple rounds and hit the woman at least one time, according to KPD.

The man who fired shots during the encounter left the scene before officers arrived. His identity is unknown, KPD said.

The woman was taken to a hospital. The man who crashed was also taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to KPD.

The investigation remains ongoing, KPD said.
