Dollywood's newest ride is nearing completion

Dollywood's newest rollercoaster, "Lightning Rod", is right on track for its Spring opening date.

(PIGEON FORGE) Dollywood's newest rollercoaster, "Lightning Rod", is right on track for its spring opening date.

"Lightning Rod" will be the world's first launching wood coaster.

The attraction sits more than twenty stories above the theme park, with the first drop totaling 165 feet.

At the first drop, riders will be propelled to 73 mph.

When completed, it will be the fastest wooden rollercoaster in the world.

"There are so many unique features to this ride and to the trains themselves," says Pete Owens, Public Relations Manager at Dollywood. "It is something that we're really excited about, the industry is really excited about, but most importantly, our guests are really excited about. This is something that they've been waiting for and we're excited to bring it to them."

"Lightning Rod" is placed in the well-known "Jukebox Junction" area at Dollywood.

"Jukebox Junction" will be getting a facelift.

Dollywood staff members tell us they're expanding Red's Diner, adding hundreds of covered seats for park-goers and remodeling the dining area.

Everything is set to open in March.
