How the cookie crumbles | Girl Scout Cookie Booths go on temporary hiatus due to COVID-19 concerns

The Cookie Program has been extended to April 5, 2020 after the Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians announced it would cancel its cookie booths.

Reports of people stocking up on toilet paper, hand sanitizer and non-perishables are spreading across social media in response to the spread of coronavirus. Now, people may start stocking up on other items — Thin Mints, Samoas and Tagalongs.

The Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians announced Friday that its Girl Scout Cookie program would go on temporary hiatus, recommending that troops cancel setting up their iconic booths.

The program was extended to April 5, but the Girl Scouts said the date could change as the COVID-19 situation develops. The cookie program was originally scheduled to end on March 22.

They also announced that it would cancel all council activities through March 31. All camps, service centers and shops will also be closed through March 31. They said that they are following the recommendations of local health officials.

The announcement is the latest in a series of closures across East Tennessee in response to the spread of COVID-19. Dollywood postponed its grand opening, and the SEC canceled all athletic activities through at least April 15. Several schools and colleges also canceled class in response to the pandemic.
