KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — "Dupes" are everywhere, thanks to social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

A "dupe" is short for duplicate—a cheaper alternative to premium or luxury products. The online shopping trend is exploding in popularity, especially among Gen-Z and millennials.

TikTok videos with the hashtag "dupe" have racked up nearly 6 billion views and a recent survey reports nearly one-third of adults surveyed have intentionally bought a dupe at some point.

Here are some "dupes" we found that could save you some serious cash.

Starting with a viral favorite, the Supergoop! sunscreen sells for $38 at many beauty retailers. It gives your skin a glowy finish—however, the e.l.f. Comestics sunscreen is just as good and it's $14. 

The cheaper sunscreen does have a slightly lower SPF, but has the same lightweight feel and is just as effective. It's also vegan and cruelty-free.

Turning to a popular shoe trend making waves, Birkenstock sandals can run up to $160. It's a staple in many closets right now.

However, we found a nearly identical "dupe" at Target for $24.99. The retail giant periodically offers 20% off shoes so, keep an eye out!

The straps are 100% leather and feel as soft and comfortable as the luxury brand.

How about deals for the kitchen?

This great dinnerware "dupe" is almost identical to a dinnerware set made in France and sold by Williams Sonoma.

Those will cost you about $30 per plate. But, these Target dishes are a fraction of the price at $4 per plate.

Both are microwave and dishwasher-safe porcelain.
