Corryton farmer prepares for Market Square farmer's market

Daniel Willings started his farm in the fall of 2021. Each year it gets bigger and better.

CORRYTON, Tenn. — May marks the ramping-up season for local farmers who want to take their goods to Market Square on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The summer season for the farmer's market at Market Square begins this Wednesday, which marks a busy season for Corryton farmer Daniel Willings.

Willings and his family raise non-GMO, organic, free-range chickens for meat and eggs at their 16-acre farm at Naturally Green Farm and Flowers. He also grows mushrooms and flowers.

At the farmer's market, you can find vegetables, mushrooms and chickens.

Right now, the food is mainly sustaining his family, with some extras going to farmer's markets. He says as a small farm, the start-up process has some challenges.

His goal is to scale up his business and provide more restaurants in the future.

"Our margin is very thin on the chickens and the eggs, but we want to have variety," Willings said. "I want customers to come to us and be able to get everything they can."

He said although the product is expensive, supporting local farms is supporting your community.

"You are getting to know the farmer that is providing the food that you are eating," Willings said. "You know where and how the chicken was raised. You can come look for yourself rather than these larger companies."

The Farmer's Market on Market Square runs every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until Thanksgiving.
