A Novel Idea: Virtual Volunteer Book Club connects UT alumni from home

Vols from across the U.S. and in the Knoxville Alumni Chapter will read books written by three University of Tennessee alumni.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Having to stay at home can leave people wondering what to do with all the newfound time they have on their hands. People can fill their days by reading a few good books or by digitally connecting with old friends.

University of Tennessee alumni will be able to do both at the same time with the new virtual Volunteer Book Club. Joining the club is completely free, although readers will need to purchase the books that are read on their own.

Buying books for the club will also help support the work of fellow alumni. They will only read books written by UT alumni, starting with Hung Up: Why You Should Put the Phone Down (and Other Life Advice) by Haley Evans.

The club will meet over Zoom, which allows people to connect in virtual rooms and talk as if they were together. It's a free service and available for anyone to use.

Books for the club are available for purchase through online vendors or on Kindle, according to the club's webpage. Its first meeting will be 3 p.m. May 1. Anyone who plans to attend one of the club's meetings should register online beforehand.

You'll find more details on the club's link.

By holding the book club online, over Zoom, the chapter hopes to promote social distancing and self-isolation in order to slow the spread of coronavirus.
