KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Metro Drug Coalition said Wednesday it was participating in a global program meant to facilitate donations to different causes like providing clean water, food and housing.

The "Light the World Giving Machine" initiative places vending machines in different locations across the globe. People can donate at the vending machine in exchange for a card describing a specific cause, earmarking the money to support that cause. In most places, vending machines accept credit and debit cards, as well as mobile payments.

The initiative is run through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which says it covers operational costs for the initiative. The church said all donations go to participating nonprofit organizations. Participating nonprofits include the Church World Serve, the American Red Cross, UNICEF and Liftin Hands International.

Other vending machines are located in Australia, Honolulu, Salt Lake City and the Philippines.

The Metro Drug Coalition in Knoxville said it will host a launch party in Turkey Creek at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday to celebrate the vending machines.
