Knoxville honors Nikki Giovanni

The city of Knoxville has honored native author-poet Nikki Giovanni with a cultural marker to be placed at the site where her family's home once stood.Giovanni launched a national book tour Tuesday in Knoxville for her latest release, "On My Journey Now: Looking at African-American History Through the Spirituals."She is the author of more than 30 books, poems, children's literature and essays. A 1994 children's poem is titled "Knoxville, TN."Giovanni was born in Knoxville in 1943 but moved with her parents to Cincinnati. Her family maintained ties to her home city and visited her grandparents every summer. She went to high school briefly in Knoxville before enrolling early at Fisk University in Nashville.
