Landowners awarded $2 million over Pigeon River pollution

A jury has awarded $2 million in damages to Tennessee landowners along the Pigeon River for continuing pollution from a paper mill upstream in North Carolina.

A jury has awarded $2 million in damages to Tennessee landowners along the Pigeon River for continuing pollution from a paper mill upstream in North Carolina. A Cocke County Circuit Court panel reached the verdict Wednesday after nearly a week of testimony in the third class-action lawsuit since the 1990's against Blue Ridge Paper Company and its predecessor, Champion International, over the Canton mill. The first case ended with a hung jury and a $6 million settlement for the landowners. The second lawsuit in 1998 ended with a $2.7 million dollar pretrial settlement.
