Man charged in Zaevion Dobson death convicted in separate shooting

Investigators believe Richard Gregory Williams shot his friend because he talked to police about the Zaevion Dobson murder.

Update Thursday 4:30 p.m.

One of the men facing charges for the death of Zaevion Dobson has been found guilty of trying to kill his friend who had been wanted for questioning in Dobson's death.

Richard Gregory Williams was convicted of attempted first degree murder and two counts of employing a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony, the Knox County Criminal Court Clerk's Office confirmed to 10News.

Williams and the victim, Larry North, were wanted for questioning in relation to Dobson's death. North spoke to police, and investigators believed that is why Williams shot him.

Prosecutors explained that Williams sent texts to North on April 2, 2016, and lured him out of his apartment to meet him in a parking lot at 1100 Lula Powell Drive. When North came outside with his two-year-old nephew, Williams shot at them.

North was hit seven times, the toddler wasn't struck, prosecutors said.

Dobson, a 15-year-old student at Fulton High School, was killed in a gang-related shooting in the Lonsdale neighborhood in 2015.

Williams and Christopher Bassett were charged with Dobson's death.

Judge Steven Sword scheduled sentencing for May 25.
