Brother of man accused in Blount County deputy shooting waives right to initial hearing

Marcus DeHart is scheduled back in court on Friday, Aug. 9.

BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. — The brother of an Alcoa man accused of shooting and killing Blount County Sheriff's Office deputy Greg McCowan waived his right to an initial hearing on Thursday morning.

Marcus DeHart is charged with being an accessory after the fact to a crime and is currently out on bond. 

He is accused of helping his brother, Kenneth Wayne DeHart Jr., evade police after the shooting. He appeared in Blount County General Sessions Court Judge William Brewer, who scheduled DeHart to be back in court Friday, Aug. 9. 

The charges are connected to events police said unfolded on Sevierville Road in Blount County on Feb. 8.

DeHart Jr. is accused of shooting and killing Deputy McCowan and shooting and wounding BCSO Deputy Shelby Eggers following a traffic stop. 

DeHart Jr. led law enforcement on a dayslong search before they arrested him.
