Mom records cars passing her children's school bus illegally

A Knoxville mom has posted videos on Facebook page of multiple drivers passing her children's school bus illegally.

For the past couple years, Ellie Whitesell has been upset by seeing her children's school bus from West Valley Middle get passed by cars illegally, almost every day.

She’s posted several videos on her Facebook page and has nearly 6,000 views and hundreds of comments.

“People aren't paying attention when the stop signs have been out. My child could get killed,” Whitesell said.

Whitesell went to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office to let them know about the issue and said nothing has changed.

The sheriff's office released this statement to 10News on Monday:

"There are a hundred or more bus stops in Knox County. KCSO regularly monitors school zones and bus stops. If we receive a complaint, we will do what we can to alleviate the problem"

The best way to prevent people from passing stopped buses with stop signs out is through education; drivers should always be aware of their surroundings and stay off the phone."

JLL Transport operates the bus that stops at Whitesell’s neighborhood. The owner, John Llewellyn, said people break the law every day.

“It’s a big enough issue that with 330 buses that run every day, there's about 10 to 15 I hear on my dispatch every day,” he said.

If you see this happening in your neighborhood, you can call the transportation department at 865-594-1550 to file a report.
