(WBIR - Knoxville) A Civil War battlefield will reappear this weekend in Knox County as part of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Sanders. Festivities will be held Thursday through Sunday near Corryton in the 10,000 block of Washington Pike on the site of the reconstructed fort.
The commemoration of one of Knoxville's most famous battles begins Thursday and Friday morning when hundreds of students will get a chance to witness military and Civil War era demonstrations.
The site opens up to the public for free on Friday at 1 p.m. and will feature public lectures and more demonstrations.
Visitors on Friday afternoon will also have a chance to be a part of creating history. Event organizers plan to recreate a photo from 1890 depicting a reunion of Civil War soldiers. The photo is scheduled to be taken around 3:45 p.m. Friday during the commemoration ceremonies.
Highlighting the anniversary events will be the Battle of Fort Sanders re-enactments on Saturday and Sunday.
Admission is $8 for adults, and free for children under the age of 6. Families with four or more members will pay a max of $30. Admission is good for both days.
Steve Dean, with the Battle of Fort Sanders, said he hopes people will attend and walk away with an appreciation for what happened in the past.
"We never call this a celebration because when 600,000 people lose their lives it's not something you celebrate but it is something you commemorate and learn from," Dean said.
