People protest Magnolia Streetscape project at City Council meeting

A group of people turned out to the Knoxville City Council meeting Tuesday night to voice their opposition to a makeover of Magnolia Avenue. The city plans to give the street a facelift through a two-phase, $8 million dollar project.

City leaders say the goal is to attract investors to the area, but some members of the community say it's not the answer they wanted. They want officials to support existing businesses instead of changing the street landscape..

Council member Daniel Brown says he supports the project.. but thinks it's important to hear from the community.

"Any plan that you have, you're going to get some questioning of it, you're going to get some support for it, so I'm going to try to listen to all my constituents and let them contact me and tell me what they think about it," he said.

Also at the meeting, Knoxville city leaders approved an $8 million dollar contract to repave more than 60 miles of streets. The project could take a little more than two years to complete.

Knoxille will cover costs to repave more than 46 miles and KUB will pay another 17.8 miles. The work is expected to start in March.

Leaders also approved a resolution asking the Metropolitan Planning Commission to add zoning regulations for payday loan shops.
