Shipt grocery delivery service launches in Knoxville

Between Shipt and Instacart, you can now order what you need from Target, Kroger, Publix, Food City, CVS, Whole Foods and PetCo and have it delivered to your home.

Shipt, a new grocery deliver service is now available in Knoxville.

The business, both a website and app on your phone, allows you to order your groceries from home and have them delivered within an hour.

Shipt will join Instacart, another grocery deliver service that's been in Knoxville for about a year, as another alternative to shopping in person.

Between the two companies, you can order what you need from Target, Kroger, Publix, Food City, CVS, Whole Foods and PetCo.

To use the service, go online, pick out what you want, pick your delivery time and your groceries show up at your door that day.

UT retail economics professor Michelle Childs said more businesses are utilizing these services to keep up with the popularity of Amazon Prime.

"You're either going to join the game or sort of get left behind," said Childs. "So I think more and more customers are looking for that convenience, and so all the major players are really joining in."

Both Nnstacart and Shipt require annual memberships.

Looking at non-sale prices, Shipt is a little bit cheaper at $99/month for that membership.

Instacart charges $149/month.

The two companies differ slightly on other fees, like individual cost of items, but delivery is free for any order over $35.

Shipt's website says for a $35 grocery order, you'll pay about $5 more for using their service instead of going to the store yourself.

Childs said that cost won't deter too many people, because it's all about convenience.

"Since multiple companies are offering it, it really means that there is a market for something like this, especially [to] a younger generation," said Childes. "They're looking for convenience. They're looking to balance sort of many things in their life and utilizing technology to really showcase that convenience."

If online grocery shopping isn't for you, these stores aren't going anywhere.

You can still do your shopping in person.
