The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most-visited national park in the country yet again.

The park service counted 11,312,786 visitors to the Smokies in 2016, beating last year's visits by more than 600-thousand. Just over 10 million people enjoyed the Smokies in 2015 and 2014.

Visitation to the Smokies almost doubled the Grand Canyon National Park, which came in at number two with just under 6 million visits. Yosemite National Park came in at number three, with just over 5 million visitors.

The location of the Smokies, within driving distance to so much of the country's population, contributes to its success. In addition, unlike many national parks, there is no entrance fee to enjoy it.

The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, also located in East Tennessee, was number 102 on the most-visited list, with 684,715 visitors last year.
