Metro Police Detective Chad Gish wrapped up his direct testimony Wednesday morning in the third day of Brandon Vandenburg's retrial in Nashville.

Gish recovered graphic photographs and videos of the rape in Vandenburg's dorm nearly three years ago, and the jury saw those on Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday morning, Gish told the jurors about messages Vandenburg sent other people. Key pieces of Gish's testimony were:

  • In the hours before the incident, Vandenburg told a friend in California he was going to "make sure i f--- tonight" and would call during sex.
  • Vandenburg called the friend at the same time the incident took place, and the call lasted 1 minute 11 seconds.
  • Vandenburg made 15 phone calls to friends and other men charged in the case in a two-hour window that included the time in the dorm.
  • Vandenburg texted the woman in the days after. Three days later, he told her: "I would never let what they're saying happen to you."

Defense attorneys will cross-examine the detective Wednesday afternoon.

Vandenburg, 23, is charged with aggravated rape and other counts in the assault of an unconscious woman in his dorm on June 23, 2013. He was dating the woman at the time.

A jury found Cory Batey guilty in the case after a trial in April. Two other men, Jaborian “Tip” McKenzie and Brandon E. Banks, have charges pending. Those two have pleaded not guilty.
