Warrants detail prior interactions that led to KPD shooting and killing Jamauri Griffin on Saturday

Griffin was charged after firing shots into tires at the same address in February, warrants show.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Warrants detailed the prior interactions between Jamauri Griffin and Winter Basurto before Knoxville Police Department officers shot and killed Griffin early Saturday morning.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said officers responded to a domestic call. When they arrived, Griffin shot Basurto in the face. Officers then fired, killing Griffin.

Michelle Braden, a friend of Basurto's family, said she underwent one "of many" facial reconstruction surgeries at the University of Tennessee Medical Center on Sunday. She'll need a tracheotomy and a feeding tube, a GoFundMe campaign said.

Around two months earlier, warrants said Griffin, Basurto's ex-boyfriend, went to her home with the intention of getting her back. He brought flowers, the warrants said. When she said, "No," he destroyed the flowers, court records said.

"Basurto then attempted to leave the scene, but observed Griffin standing at the end of her driveway with a handgun in his hand pointed at the ground," the warrant said.

He fired multiple times at the driver's side tire, the warrant said. Griffin left the scene, but later returned, trying to talk to her again.

Griffin was charged with reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and vandalism for the Feb. 7, 2024 incident. He was due back in court on those charges next week.

Braden said the family is trying to raise money for Basurto's medical bills. KPD said Basurto's injuries are not considered life threatening, though the family said she will likely need months to recover.

The two officers involved in the shooting of Griffin are on administrative leave, as is standard for KPD. The police department has not released the names of the officers involved.

TBI is leading the investigation.
