UT Medical Center dispels social media rumors saying hospital is on lockdown

"We've seen posts circulating on social media with incorrect information. Please understand: UT Medical Center is not on lockdown."

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The UT Medical Center took to Facebook on Saturday to clarify the hospital was not shut down.

"We’ve seen posts circulating on social media with incorrect information. Please understand: UT Medical Center is not on lockdown," the post read.

For the safety of our patients and team members, UT Medical Center, ... in partnership with our health care community, is no longer allowing visitors in the hospital starting on March 21 at 8 am. We realize the burden this places on patients and their families and sincerely thank you for your understanding during this challenging time.

Last week, UT Medical Center implemented stricter visitor restrictions in light of COVID-19.

"For the safety of our patients and team members, local hospitals are no longer allowing visitors, with exceptions in place for certain situations. In addition, we have set up a tent outside of the Emergency Department to assess patients with respiratory symptoms, which keeps these individuals separate from others seeking care in the ED," the university said.
