Newfound Gap Road reopens in the Great Smoky Mountains after 'a law enforcement action'

The National Park Service temporarily closed the road for law enforcement action between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, N.C.

Great Smoky Mountains Natl. Park — A main road in the Great Smoky Mountains that takes travelers between Tennessee and North Carolina is open again after it abruptly closed Saturday afternoon due to "law enforcement action."

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park posted to its Smokies Road Info social media account around 1:20 p.m. that Newfound Gap Road/U.S. Highway 441 was temporarily closed Saturday between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, N.C. for "a law enforcement action."

The GSMNP said the road was open again as of 2:15 p.m. after being closed for about an hour.

According to the GSMNP, rangers responded after a driver drove away from a traffic stop. Rangers said they made contact with the driver and that the incident is still under investigation.

"There were no injuries to rangers or the driver," the park said.
