A look inside the National Weather Service

Update Friday 11 p.m. -

The snow in Hamblen County started intensifying Friday afternoon into the evening. While some roads remained relatively clear, officials are urging everyone to stay off the roads.

At the National Weather Service in Morristown, they worker to track the winter storm making its way into East Tennessee.

“We are lucky that we have some hair left because it is super challenging. Winter weather in East Tennessee is very difficult,” Anthony Cavullici with the National Weather Service.

The organization relies on the help of volunteer reports to track each storm's impact.

“Our radar is pretty fancy, it sees that it’s snowing, but it doesn’t know how much is on the ground and that is where the spotters really help, they measure the snow and report it to us,” Cavullici said.

(MORRISTOWN) Precipitation moved Friday afternoon into Hamblen County - first rain and then finally after 5 p.m., turned to snow.

Much more snow is expected as we move into night - perhaps 3 to 6 inches, according to forecasters.

As of 4 p.m. driving conditions remained fine on the main roads. The temperature has begun to fall, however, and secondary streets are still tricky.

The Morristown office of the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning Friday, which means driving conditions are expected to get hazardous. It remains in effect until 4 a.m. Sunday.

As rain changes to snow, it's expected that roads will become trickier to negotiate.

Authorities are urging everyone to stay off the roads unless it's necessary.

Hamblen County's emergency director told 10News staff and volunteers were ready for Friday night's expected snowfall.

Crews worked Friday to clear snow from secondary roads, some of which featured hills that make them hard to negotiate.
