Animals at Zoo Knoxville enjoy Christmas tree treats

The donated trees provide extra enrichment and fun for the animals

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Animals at Zoo Knoxville got a special holiday treat on New Year's Eve.

Local retailers donated live Christmas trees that weren't sold to the zoo for animals to eat and enjoy.

The gorillas' tree was hung upside down for easy access and decorated with popcorn, tomatoes, and oranges. It didn't take them long to start un-decorating it and popping the organic ornaments in their mouths!

As for the tigers, the tree started out right side up, but just like house cats, it didn't take long for the graceful feline to knock it down!

Tigers at Zoo Knoxville enjoyed a Christmas tree treat.

The tiger tree was dripping with paper-wrapped balls of meat, which the cat enjoyed ripping apart.

The big cats will enjoy playing and tossing the tree around over the next few days.

The zoo says it's a great way to stimulate the animals.
