KPD identifies victim in fatal North Knoxville shooting, no charges filed 'at this time'

The Knoxville Police Department said the suspected shooter, who knew the victim, was taken in for questioning.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Police Department said it's investigating a fatal shooting that happened early Monday morning in North Knoxville.

Around 2:50 a.m., officers responded to a reported shooting that happened inside a home in the 5700 block of Chesswood Drive, according to KPD.  The department said when officers arrived, they found a man who had been shot at least one time. He was pronounced dead on the scene. 

On Tuesday, police identified the victim as Benjamin Vellines, 47, from Knoxville.

The suspected shooter, who was known to the victim, was detained and taken in for questioning, according to KPD. The police department said it's believed the shooting happened after a confrontation involving Vellines and another man. Two guns were found at the scene, and no charges had been filed as of Tuesday in connection to the shooting.
