TBI: Woman now accused of killing her mother in Rockwood following death investigation

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said the Roane County Sheriff's Office asked for help investigating the woman's death.

ROCKWOOD, Tenn. — UPDATE (April 25): The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said a woman was arrested and charged with first-degree murder on Thursday after she was accused of killing her mother.

The bureau said Marie Hefner was accused of killing Bertha Lodewegen, 75, after an autopsy on her body revealed her death was a homicide. 

The investigation began on April 20 when the Roane County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a dead woman at a home on Circle Drive, in Rockwood. When deputies arrived, they said they found the body of Lodewegen.  The next day, TBI joined the sheriff's office in the investigation.

Investigators said they determined Hefner was responsible for Lodewegen's death. She was taken into custody at the Roane County Sheriff's Office, and no bond was set as of Thursday afternoon.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said it was investigating a possible homicide on Tuesday after a woman was found dead in a Rockwood home.

The Roane County Sheriff's Office previously said on Sunday that the woman's death appeared to be accidental, and said it looked like she fell down some stairs. District Attorney General Russell Johnson also said the home was located on Circle Drive the incident was being investigated as a homicide.

TBI said the Roane County Sheriff's Office reached out for help investigating the death.
