New video shows car crashing into restaurant Saturday night, hitting employee with debris

A 25-year-old driver, Baleigh Bates, was believed to be severely intoxicated, the Knoxville Police Department said.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — One person was hit by debris after a car crashed into Taqueria La Herradura along with a car in the parking lot around 9:40 p.m. Saturday night, the Knoxville Police Department said.

According to KPD, a Mazda sedan left the scene after the crash but was quickly found broken down on the side of the road in the area of Broadway and Edgewood.

A 25-year-old driver, Baleigh Bates, was believed to be severely intoxicated, KPD said. She was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of the accident "among other charges."

La Herradura released video footage of the crash on Monday showing a car crossing traffic on North Broadway and crashing into the front of the building. The driver is seen reversing and driving away a few moments after hitting the building.

Bates was the only reported injury other than the employee hit by debris inside the restaurant. The employee was hit in his left leg but did not wish to receive any medical treatment, according to a police report.

Bates was then transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where "she was treated for minor injuries from the crash and has since been booked," KPD said.

According to the report, Bates was unable to conduct a field sobriety test because she "demonstrated uncooperative and violent behavior towards officers and first responders."

The restaurant posted on social media that it would be closed on May 5, along with some images of the crash the night before.

The Manager of the restaurant said they hope to be open by the end of the month. However, the restaurant can't guarantee it as they work through insurance claims and repair costs.

According to the Knox County Sheriff's Office, Bates is expected to be in court Thursday at 8:30 a.m.

We will closed tomorrow do to the incident 2625 Broadway st. We will be open as normal at our other locations.
