Saturday marks April's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, giving people a chance to safely dispose of drugs

People in Knoxville can stop by a grocery store in Cedar Bluff to safely get rid of unused, unwanted and expired household medications.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — On Saturday, people across the U.S. will have the chance to safely get rid of prescription drugs, helping make sure they don't end up in the hands of someone who may misuse them.

The Metro Drug Coalition said it is working with the Knoxville Police Department on a medication take-back event at a Kroger grocery store in Cedar Bluff. From 10 a.m. through 2 p.m., people can stop by to hand over any medication they no longer want or use, as well as any prescriptions that have expired. People can also bring syringes and expired Naloxone.

The store is located at 9225 Kingston Pike, and the event will also accept unopened wound care and first-aid items, as well as unopened syringes, to benefit the Choice Health Network's harm reduction work.

People can drop off pet medications, ointments, liquid medications and items like EpiPens.

It's part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The day is meant to encourage people to remove unneeded medications from their homes to help prevent medication misuse and opioid addiction from starting.

The day happens in April and October every year, when communities across the U.S. organize take-back events.
