Harriman High School honored for registering all eligible students to vote this year

The East Tennessee high school got the Anne Dallas Dudley Gold Level Award on April 19 for its work registering eligible students to vote.

HARRIMAN, Tenn. — An East Tennessee high school was recognized by state leaders on Friday for its work registering all eligible students to vote.

All students at least 18 years old registered to vote at Harriman High School, and so the school was presented with the Anne Dallas Dudley Gold Level Award. The Tennessee Secretary of State, Tre Hargett, was there to present it along with the Roane County Administrator of Elections.

"I think it's very important that we take time to educate our students on the future, because they are the future. This, the students I have in my building, they are the next leaders, I hope. I hope I have the next principal, I hope I have the next elected official. And so, I'm excited that we started this process now," said Chasity Lowry, the principal of the school.

To be eligible to vote in Tennessee, people need to be at least 18 years old and not have been convicted of a felony. Online voter registration is available for people who are eligible, as well as mailed voter registration applications.
