KPD identifies officers involved in shooting on Santala Drive in West Knoxville

Knoxville Police initially responded to a call of a "domestic situation" involving a man with a gun at a home in the 4700 block of Santala Drive.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Police Department has identified the involved officers from the shooting that happened on Santala Drive.

KPD identified the officers as Hunter Powers and Cayden Riddle. Both officers graduated from the KPD training academy in February 2023 and are assigned to West District Field Operations, KPD said.

KPD officers responded to a call of a "domestic situation" involving a man with a gun at a home in the 4700 block of Santala Drive in West Knoxville.

Two officers arrived about ten minutes later and entered the home. According to KPD, the man, later identified as Jamauri D. Griffin, shot a woman, Winter Basurto, in the face which prompted officers to shoot. Griffin was hit at least once and was later pronounced dead.

Responders took Basurto to UT Medical Center where she later died.

Per standard protocol, Officers Powers and Riddle have been placed on routine, administrative leave.
