KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Transportation said Monday that it was aware of a section of I-40 near downtown Knoxville that has concerned some drivers.

The section of road leads drivers to Alcoa Highway, and several said it is covered with jarring cracks. It is a highly traversed road that can take motorists to spots like the University of Tennessee, The Strip or send them on their way to McGhee Tyson Airport.

It's also among the spots that TDOT pothole crews are repairing across East Tennessee.

"It's very difficult during normal business hours to be able to get out there and patch in those areas, but that's a spot that we're aware of. We'll get to it when we can, and that may be the type of thing that requires rolling roadblocks or even some overnight work," said Mark Nagi, a spokesperson for TDOT.

He also urged drivers to slow down on that section of road, since driving over the cracks too quickly can damage cars. He also said motorists should make sure to give crews space, helping make sure everyone stays safe.

There have been 27 cases so far this year involving drivers crashing into TDOT trucks and equipment. By slowing down and paying attention to the road, drivers can avoid these collisions and take extra care around areas with potholes.
