Alcoa Highway lane closures planned over the weekend for road repairs

TDOT said personnel noticed a quickly-developing dip on three lanes of Alcoa Highway, near UT Medical Center. They said it needs to be addressed immediately.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Officials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation said drivers may notice some lane closures on Alcoa Highway over the weekend, near the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

They said personnel noticed a dip across three northbound lanes of Alcoa Highway that was quickly growing. After investigating it, officials said there are concerns there could be holes under the roadway that need to be addressed immediately.

Starting Saturday at around 7 a.m., the northbound merge lane will be closed just after drivers leave the hospital. They will still be able to use the lane, but drivers will need to merge onto Alcoa Highway more quickly as work continues on the road through around 6 p.m.

During this time, contractors will be pressure grouting to stabilize the dip in the road.

On Sunday starting at 7 a.m., two lanes will be closed on Alcoa Highway — the merge lane and the outside through-lanes. The lanes will stay closed until around 6 p.m. while pressure grouting continues, according to officials.

The department partnered with Rembco, Blalock and APAC contractors to fix the road.

Officials said work could also be required early next week, but they said Monday's weather may not allow for it. They also said drivers should be extremely cautious on the highway since workers will be present.
