'It's busy everywhere!' | Folks flock to grocery, hardware stores to prepare for winter weather

Groceries like milk, eggs and bread as well as hardware store items like snow shovels and salt are in high demand.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — With winter weather on the way, people have been out and about at grocery stores and hardware stores.

A lot of people across East Tennessee were out Saturday getting essentials to prepare for the winter weather that's expected.

Eggs, bread, and milk, along with snow shovels and salt are flying off the shelves.

"It's busy everywhere," Laura Taylor, a shopper out buying spigot covers, said. "I was really surprised because I went early in the morning to grocery shop and there looked like a lot of people were there stocking up. The lines were huge, and the parking lot was full."

It's not just shoppers, at the Elder's Ace Hardware, the store manager said it's been busy and they're out of shovels. But the store has plenty of other essentials to help those stay prepared.

Some were worried about the weather and felt the need to get prepared, while others were excited about the snow.

"I've got my de-icer for my driveway, my steps up to my deck and my porch," Maria Hurt said. "I've got my snow shovel out, although I doubt I'll need it. I was born in Canada, so I miss the snow every winter. I get excited."

Schools across East Tennessee will be closed on Monday for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
