Appalachian Mountain Bike Club buying more land to create new connector trail in Urban Wilderness

The club said it hopes to buy 2.9 acres of land near Prospect Road in South Knoxville.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A Knoxville-area nonprofit that develops and maintains bike trails is buying more land to build a new trail that could connect a neighborhood to Knoxville's Urban Wilderness.

The Appalachian Mountain Bike Club said it is already under contract to buy around 2.9 acres of land by the South Loop Route and the Lost Chromosome Trail. The land is located behind Anderson School on Prospect Road, in South Knoxville. It also neighbors Knox County land that's already used as a park, the nonprofit said.

After buying the land, the nonprofit said it would start a land conservation project to maintain tree canopy, increase greenspace buffers for trail users and allow for a neighborhood connector trail. With that trail, people living nearby would be able to more easily access the miles of Urban Wilderness trails throughout Knoxville.

The parcels of land are bisected by the South Loop Route — one is 1.6 acres large and the other is 1.3 acres large.

The nonprofit said it is hoping to raise at least $35,000 so it can purchase the acres.
