The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said deputies tried to pull the car over because they suspected the driver was under the influence.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Tenn. — A person is dead after a police pursuit ended in a crash in Morgan County, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office

At around 6:08 p.m., CCSO said the pursuit was initiated by Cumberland County deputies around the Mt. Roosevelt Road area. In a release, the sheriff's office said deputies tried to pull over a black Chevrolet Cobalt because of erratic driving and a suspicion the driver was under the influence.

It did not stop, and people started to throw items out of its windows as it went onto I-40, according to the sheriff's office. It exited the highway at Airport Road and drove towards Morgan County, where it crashed.

Authorities said Brandon Hughett, 47, was ejected from the car and died. The release also said the driver, Charles Hughett, 74, was taken to the hospital with severe injuries.

Both had warrants in the Cumberland County and Morgan County areas, as well as prior felony convictions.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to investigate. Morgan County EMS and Morgan County Rescue Squad also responded to the scene.

This is a developing story.
