Cocke County officials capture escaped inmate

Stephen DeWayne Jones was captured after officials received a tip, according to Cocke County Sheriff C.J. Ball.

COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. — UPDATE (2:23 p.m.): Cocke County Sheriff C.J. Ball said a man who escaped from the county's detention center late Wednesday was captured. 

Stephen DeWayne Jones was taken into custody Thursday afternoon on Shalebark Road in Newport, according to Ball.

Deputies received a tip and set up a perimeter around the area. Jones was captured in the area and charged with felony escape, Ball said.

Stephen DeWayne Jones, a 37-year-old, was charged with DUI, no insurance, open container, simple possession and false reports. He left the jail around 10:25 p.m. and his last known location was a Food City parking lot on West Broadway Street, according to Ball. 

Jones is 5'8", 186 lbs, has brown hair and blue eyes and was last seen wearing blue jeans, a dark blue shirt and a black hat. Officials are searching the downtown area of Newport for him, Ball said.
