1 woman in the hospital, 3 dogs safe after house fire in West Knoxville, KFD says

The Knoxville Fire Department said the smell of smoke woke the woman up, giving her time to escape through her bedroom window.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — One woman is in the hospital, three dogs are safe and one cat is missing after a house fire on Burwood Road early Friday morning, according to the Knoxville Fire Department

At 3:04 a.m., the Knox County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call about a reported house fire in the 4100 block of Cottonwood Drive. The caller was not sure of the exact address, KFD said.

After arriving on the scene, KFD found the house fire at the corner of Cottonwood Drive and Burwood Road.

As crews were getting ready to put out the fire, they saw a woman escape from the bedroom window. She was then treated for injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

According to Knoxville Fire, the woman said she was asleep when the smell of smoke woke her up. She then went to a rear window and escaped by jumping a few feet. The three dogs then followed her.

KFD said there were no working smoke alarms in the house.

"Home fires claim seven lives every day; simply having working smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death," KFD said.

The home suffered heavy fire damage, according to officials. KFD Fire Investigators are on the scene to find the cause of the fire.

The American Red Cross is also assisting.
