KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Highway Patrol is stepping up its enforcement procedures the week of the New Year's holiday with driver's license, seatbelt and sobriety checkpoints.
They will be evaluating drivers for drug or alcohol impairments through the week.
The THP's presence on roads over New Year's is meant to keep reckless and intoxicated drivers away from sitting behind a wheel. Between 2017 and 2018, DUI violations increased by 30 percent.
The THP said that drivers should plan ahead before celebrating the holiday to make sure they have a safe and sober ride back home. Drivers can also use rideshare apps, or call a taxi, to get home after a New Year's celebration.
