NWS issues Red Flag Warning for East Tennessee until 8 p.m. Friday due to heightened fire danger

The NWS said high winds are forecast to last until 8 p.m. and could cause fires to spread rapidly due to the warm and dry conditions

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — The National Weather Service in Morristown has issued a Red Flag warning for the entirety of East Tennessee and Southeast Kentucky until 8 p.m. Friday.

The NWS said the fire danger is high in the area due to the combination of dry conditions, warmer temperatures and strong winds that will last through the evening, saying any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.

Winds with gusts up to 35 miles per hour are expected at times through the evening.

Earlier Friday, the NWS issued a special weather statement warning of enhanced fire dangers across Tennessee.

"Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn today. Use extreme caution when burning as fires may get out of hand quickly in these conditions," the NWS said.

The warning was originally set to expire at 6 p.m. but the National Weather Service extended it by 2 hours late Friday afternoon.

You can find the list of wildfires crews that are responding to across the state on the Tennessee Division of Forestry's website.
